Westview Cemetery, established in 1884, is the largest civilian cemetery in the Southeastern United States and contains approximately 600 acres of land (300 hundred undeveloped), 19 miles of road, more than 125,000 graves, and one of the largest community mausoleums (11,444 crypts) in North America.
For photo requests, please contact the cemetery office at (404)755-6611 for a section/lot/grave location. They may also tell you whether there is a marker on the lot or not.
Westview became the primary burial place for Atlanta citizens when historic Oakland Cemetery (1850) sold its last burial plots in the early 1880s.
Part of the Battle of Ezra Church during the American Civil War occurred on the northern end of the property on July 28, 1864. It was the last of three major battles that ultimately resulted in the city of Atlanta falling to the Union. There are still Union trenches on the property, which for years have been erroneously labeled as Confederate trenches.
The present Romanesque-revival gatehouse was built in 1890 and is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the city.
Westview was added to the Georgia Register of Historic Places in 2019 and to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.
