Do clams have pearls?
Although clams and mussels can also produce pearls, they don't do so very often. Most pearls are made by oysters, and they can be made in either freshwater or saltwater environments. As oysters grow, an internal organ called the mantle uses minerals from the oyster's food to produce a substance called nacre.
Pearls form inside a mollusk which is an invertebrate with a soft body, often protected by a shell such as a clam, oyster or mussel. Any mollusk is capable of producing a pearl, although only those mollusks that have shells lined with nacre produce pearls that are used in the jewellery industry.
According to several online articles, the odds of finding one in a clam are about one in 100,000. “He goes, 'It's probably one in a million, one in a million to have it perfect, usually there's pieces of them missing and it looks like a tooth or something it is never like a whole perfect little oval.
The value of clam pearls can also vary widely according to factors like size, type, surface quality and color, and just like oyster pearls, natural clam pearls are more valuable than cultured ones. On average, the value of a clam pearl ranges from $300 to $1,500 depending on its quality.
Like nacreous pearls, tridacna pearls grow in mollusks. Specifically, they form in bivalve mollusks of the Tridacna genus of clams. This genus includes giant clams of enormous size. In fact, the largest pearls ever found from this genus are weighed in kilograms rather than carats.
While all mollusks, including oysters, mussels, and clams can technically make pearls, only some saltwater clams and freshwater mussels are used to commercially grow cultured gem-grade pearls.
A perfect source for the production of such fake pearls is the Tridacna clam, amongst the largest living bivalve mollusc with a massive and thick shell of up to 110 cm diameter, mainly living along shallow coastal waters in the Indo-Pacific region (Rosewater, 1965).
Some pearl “farmers” will remove pearls from an oyster without killing them, keeping them alive to endure repeated insertions of foreign materials to continue making pearls. It is estimated that around a third to half of them are kept while the rest are killed.
Naturally colored blue pearls are the rarest pearl colors in the world (with one or two exceptions, which we will get to below). The color has existed in pearls for decades, but only recently have naturally colored blue pearls gained popularity in the modern pearl jewelry markets.
What is the most rare pearl? The most rare pearl in the world is the Melo Melo, which is produced by a sea snail and not an oyster or a mollusk.
How long does it take for a clam to make a pearl?
Some pearls can develop in a period of six months. Larger pearls can take up to four years to develop. This is one of several reasons why larger pearls can yield higher values. Pearl farmers must have immense patience to wait for a pearl inside an oyster shell to develop.
Natural Black pearls (uncultivated) are extremely rare and are found in about 1 in every 10,000 oysters. In an effort to preserve the species, it is illegal to dive to find natural pearls.

The value of a pearl can vary dramatically depending on many factors, such as its type, size, color, surface quality, and more. A wild pearl will be worth more than a cultured pearl. However, on average, a pearl's value ranges from $300 to $1500.
A good-sized irregular pearl can be found in about one in 100 clams. However, a good-sized, natural, round pearl occurs only once in every 10,000 clams. The mussel, a simple creature with a unique ability to produce magnificent pearls, has a colorful past and is an integral part of the fascinating history of the river.
Giant clams are now protected by national legislation in most range countries.
The sea stone could go for anywhere from $50 to $100,000 -- depending on the body of water it originated in. Auctioneers could shell out some serious clams for this. A New Jersey couple might've feasted their way to fortune after they found a pearl potentially worth thousands in a restaurant clam.
Scallops do occasionally produce pearls, though scallop pearls do not have the buildup of translucent layers or "nacre" which give desirability to the pearls of the feather oysters, and usually lack both lustre and iridescence.
The question at hand is whether clams have eyes. The answer is yes, but it's not what you might expect. Clams do possess rudimentary light-sensing organs called "eyespots." These eyespots can detect changes in light intensity, allowing clams to distinguish between light and darkness in their surroundings.
Every year millions of Americans eat molluscan shellfish, especially oysters and clams. While many people can enjoy these foods in either raw or cooked form, certain people are at risk of illness from eating them raw and need to be sure to eat these foods only if they are cooked properly.
Soft shell clams can live for 10-12 years. Some may have lived for as long as 28 years. A green crab can eat as many as 15 clams a day. A bushel of soft shelled clams weighs about 60 pounds.
Why are giant clam shells so expensive?
Now viewed as high-value luxury food item, giant clams are also in demand in the international aquarium trade, and their shells are sought after for the ornamental carving industry. The Wildlife Justice Commission is concerned that giant clam shells are being used as a substitute for elephant ivory.
A real pearl will have some bumps or ridges on its surface, while a fake pearl will be perfectly smooth. In addition, a real pearl will have a luminescent sheen when held up to the light, while a fake pearl may appear dull or plastic-like.
After the pearls are extracted from the oysters, one-third of oysters are “recycled” and put through the culturing process again. The others are killed and discarded.
The Giga Pearl holds the record as the largest certified non-nacreous pearl in the world. The pearl weighs in at 27.65 kg (60-lb 15-oz) and measures 39.37 cm (15.5 in) x 22.86 cm (9 in) x 20.95 cm (8.25 in), which is four times larger than the Pearl of Lao Tzu (formerly the Pearl of Allah) which weighs 6.4 kg.
After many, many years of diving for pearls, divers have made natural pearls so rare; some say they are close to becoming extinct. Therefore, they are hard to find on the ocean's surface these days. Because of this rarity, natural pearls are generally much more expensive than cultured pearls.
